Member of Parliament for the Cities of London & Westminster, Nickie Aiken, led the House of Commons debate on London's heritage.

The historic and cultural heritage that are our neighbourhoods brings joy to so many people.

Whether it’s local people living here, commuters coming in for work or tourists and visitors seeing what the heart of central London has to offer. All spending billions of pounds to support our local economy in places such as theatres, restaurants, cafés, and bars.

Nickie knows so many of you value the historic assets that we enjoy in the Two Cities, so she was delighted to secure an adjournment debate on protecting London’s heritage in the House of Commons Chamber on Thursday and champion the work of local people and neighbourhoods.

From the campaign to preserve Westminster’s Victorian gas lamps ably led by The London Gasketeers, the drive to save Simpson's Tavern, or work to retain historic buildings such as Bevis Marks Synagogue and Smithfield Market.

In the Commons, Nickie also stood with the Barbican Association and Barbican Quarter Action as they work to prevent unsuitable proposals to redevelop the former site of the Museum of London and Bastion House, both buildings of huge heritage significance.

In our theatres - which draw millions of visitors each year - Nickie highlighted ongoing efforts to save the English National Opera, part of the cultural fabric of our world-class theatre offering, and she spoke out to save this iconic theatre company.

Our heritage is so important and it must be protected for generations to come by preserving the makeup of our neighbourhoods across central London.

Nickie was proud to be your strong local voice and speak out on the issues that affect so many of you.
